Never have more paintings been painted, and more words written about art, than today. But what does it all mean? How can you distinguish a good painting from a bad? Inspired art from eye-candy?
In this hugely engaging book, acclaimed art writer Justin Paton takes us on a journey of exploration through the centuries and across the painted world - from the luscious fruit of Italy's Caravaggio to the lonely landscapes of New Zealand's Rita Angus, the dazzling panoramas of America's Lari Pittman and the mysterious 'tombstones' of Japanese artist On Kawara.
Whether you're a keen art collector, a student of art, or just love to visit a gallery occasionally, this brilliant exposition of painting in all its forms will open your eyes to things you've never seen before.
First published December 2005.

Banksy

Artistic genius, political activist, painter and decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist?
The work of Banksy is unmistakable, except maybe when it’s squatting in the Tate or New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Banksy is responsible for decorating the streets, walls, bridges and zoos of towns and cites throughout the world. Witty and subversive, his stencils show monkeys with weapons of mass destruction, policeman with smiley faces, rats with drills and umbrellas. If you look hard enough you’ll find your own. His statements, incitements, ironies and epigrams are by turns intelligent and cheeky comments on everything from the monarchy and capitalism to the war in Iraq and farm animals. His identity remains unknown, but his work is prolific.
And now for the first time, he’s putting together the best of his work – old and new in a fully illustrated colour volume.

Andy Warhol is one of the most compelling figures of the twentieth-century art world, and his body of work has transformed the landscape of contemporary art. As well as being a prolific artist, Warhol was a notorious hoarder, saving everything that came his way in Time Capsules, boxes he kept beside his desk and into which he carefully deposited photographs, newspapers and magazines, fan letters, business and personal correspondence, artwork, source images for artwork, books, exhibition catalogues and telephone messages, along with objects and countless examples of ephemera, such as announcements for poetry readings and dinner invitations. After his death, The Andy Warhol Museum became the repository for these Time Capsules, along with some of the paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs and films for which Warhol is best known. For this project, the museum has gathered together the highlights of its collection to create a book that ...

Robert Radford

One of the best-known and most visually influential artists of the 20th century, Salvadore Dali achieved fame on an international scale as both painter and celebrity. Bridging the gap between high art and popular culture, he created in his Surrealist works a startling imagery that moved freely into the Freudian world of the subconcious - and which has subsequently been widely adopted by media and advertising. Robert Radford traces Dali's career from the Spanish town of Figueras to membership of the Surrealist Circle in Paris, then on to New York and Hollywood - with the Spanish Civil War and World War II exploding in the background.

Nancy Tichborne's Watercolour World - the creative process explored.
You could say that Nancy has been working on this book for 60 years... That’s how long she’s been painting! Formally she received very little help from others with watercolours—they were not considered ‘serious enough’ at art school for instance. So, when she decided to concentrate on watercolours, she had to basically teach herself the techniques and mysterious ways of the medium.
Since then she has painted only in watercolours and has passed her knowledge to the hundreds of people who attended her (former) workshops. Her calendars, videos and DVDs have been popular internationally—as were her two books Flowers and Cats. But this book is a first, in that it not only features 88 of her more recent paintings (all unpublished before in book form), but each one is commented on from a painter’s perspective.
First published January 2008.

Leon Reid

This unique, narrative-driven book gives an unparalleled insight into the tough, tight-knit, exciting world of street art as seen through the eyes of Darius and Downey, who have been working together since 2000. Through a series of blood-pumping adventures, it paints a vivid portrait of a creative but harsh environment of extremes: friendship and rivalry; respect and conflict; adversity and prosperity; and, reveals the incredible risks that artists take, day in, day out, to win their place in the graffiti hall of fame. Ed Zipco, acute and empathetic commentator on the ways of the street, relates Darius' and Downey's most memorable experiences. Along the way, we witness their artistic evolution from conventional graffiti tagging to ambitious street installations that are both wittily entertaining and strikingly subversive.

The Power of Art

Simon Schama

'Great art has dreadful manners...' Simon Schama observes at the start of his epic exploration of the power, and whole point, of art. 'The hushed reverence of the gallery can fool you into believing masterpieces are polite things, visions that soothe, charm and beguile, but actually they are thugs. Merciless and wily, the greatest paintings grab you in a headlock, rough up your composure and then proceed in short order to re-arrange your sense of reality...' With the same disarming force, "Power of Art" jolts us far from the comfort zone of the hushed art gallery, as Schama closes in on intense make-or-break turning points in the lives of eight great artists who, under extreme stress, created something unprecedented, altering the course of art forever. The embattled heroes - Caravaggio, Bernini, Rembrandt, David, Turner, Van Gogh, Picasso and Rothko - faced crisis with steadfast defiance. The masterpieces they created challenged ...
