Vintage New Zealand Launches order quantity
  +   -

NZ$ 55.00 each
Paperback
Author: Harold Kidd & Robin Elliott
In Stock: 2
This is a stunning collection of photographs of early powerboats and launches taken from the mid 1890s to the late 1920s by renowned maritime photographer Henry Winkelmann. Of his 600 recorded photographs of powerboats around 450 have survived and form part of the Auckland War Memorial Museum’s Winkelmann Collection.
Well-known maritime historians Harold Kidd and Robin Elliott have structured this book chronologically, following the style of Winkelmann’s Waitemata, their earlier book on Winkelmann’s yachting photography.
The first image is from 1897 and the last from 1928, a period which saw the decline of the steam launch and the popularisation of the internal combustion-engined 'oil launch', and the first and major leaps into the pursuit of speed on the water for its own sake.
The wide range of images shows a variety of craft, some utterly obscure, some quite famous, from elegant launches and humble working boats to dashing early ... more

British Warships in the Age of Sail 1793-1817 : Design, Construction, Careers and Fates order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 199.99 each
Hardback
Author: Rif Winfield
In Stock: 1
432 pages, 200 illustrations & plans

At the zenith of its power in 1809 the Royal Navy comprised one half of all the warships in the world, the first (and last) time any navy achieved this dominance. Given its importance, it is not surprising that much attention has been lavished on this subject, but among the numerous books on the design, development and technical details of these ships, there is surprisingly little readily available on their careers. Now this gap is comprehensively filled by this superb reference book, outlining the service history of every ship, built, purchased or captured, that fought for the royal Navy in the great wars of the 1793-1815 era – well over 1000 vessels.

The book is organised by Rate, classification and class, with outline technical and building data, followed by a concise summary of the careers of each ship in every class. This information includes:

• dates of commissions
• major refit ... more

Empire of the Seas: How the Navy Forged the Modern World order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 59.99 each
Hardback
Author: Brian Lavery
In Stock: 1
For four centuries, the Navy made Britain the most powerful nation on earth - the true ruler of the waves. But its impact goes way beyond battles on the high seas. This new book, a tie-in to a major BBC TV series presented by Dan Snow, is written by one of the nation's foremost naval historians, and tells the story of how the Royal Navy shaped the politics, culture and economy of Britain, leaving its imprint on everything from our landscape, to our democracy and even our very identity. At its peak, it became the driving force behind the spread of a system of values which would change the world forever. And then it lost it all.
In Masters of the Sea, Brian Lavery re-injects the romance into Britain's seafaring past. He discusses the hidden human stories behind the celebrated sea-battles and also provides a warts-and-all expose of the darker chapters in the Navy's past, including its role in slavery and spread of disease. ... more

Author: Mark Chirnside
In Stock: 1
She entered service two months before the start of World War One and was scrapped six years after World War Two ended and was the longest lasting of all four funnelled liners. For two wars, she spent much time transporting troops but for the rest of her career she travelled the North Atlantic as one of the most famous liners afloat. Holding many records, Aquitania was built for the Cunard Line, not for speed but for luxury, at which she excelled, being called the Ship Magnificent from her entry into service.

Mark Chirnside writes with a passion about this most beautiful of ships, a ship that was the epitome of the four-funnelled liner.

The Cargo Liners order quantity

NZ$ 145.00 each
Hardback
Author: Ambrose Greenway
In Stock: 1
240 pages, 350 B & W photos

For 100 years, between 1850 and 1950, the cargo liner grew to dominate the world's trade routes, providing regular services that merchants, shippers and importers could rely on; they carried much of the world's higher value manufactured goods and raw materials and their services spread to most corners of the world.

This new book, evocatively illustrated with a magnificent collection of more than 300 photographs, begins with the establishment of routes around Europe and across the North Atlantic in the 1850s. Not until the Liverpool ship owner and engineer, Alfred Holt, developed high-pressure compound engines were coal-powered vessels able to steam further afield, to the Far East and Australia. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 cemented the dominance of the cargo liner and not until the appearance of the first container ship in the 1950s was that dominance threatened.

The Sitmar Liners order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 89.99 each
Hardback
Author: Peter Plowman
In Stock: 1
This story of the Sitmar Liners is written primarily from an Australian perspective, but it also covers the general development of the company and its operations throughout the world.
In the late 1940s SITMAR entered the passenger trades by obtaining contracts from the International Refugee Organisation to transport displaced persons from European ports to Australia and other countries.
The first SITMAR passenger ship to come to Australia was Castelbianco, which was only one of many ships contracted to carry displaced persons. From these small beginnings, SITMAR developed into a major passenger shipping company during the 1950s, offering regular voyages between Europe and Australia for both migrants and fare-paying passengers. In the early 1970s, company entered the highly competitive North American cruise market.
In this way, Sitmar Cruises was born.
However, the link between Australia and the former Sitmar Cruises liners ... more

A New Universal Dictionary of the Marine 1815 order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 199.99 each
Hardback
Author: William Burney / William Falconer
In Stock: 0
William Falconer first published his Marine Dictionary in 1769, and it obviously filled a need because it was not merely reprinted but was actively revised on numerous occasions in the last decades of the eighteenth century. Its alphabetical format provided not just succinct definitions of maritime terminology but detailed, and sometimes tabular data on many technical aspects of shipbuilding, fitting and armament, not to mention the Royal Navy’s administrative and operational practices.

Historians and modern enthusiasts for the age of sail have always been aware of the reference value of the work and by far the most desirable edition is the fourth, of 1815, as revised and greatly expanded by the naval historian and antiquarian William Burney. Because of the time it took for information to trickle down, earlier editions tend to be out of date when published, but Burney (who had good Admiralty contacts) contrived to get dimensions, ... more
