Description

William Beatson was a London architect who emigrated to New Zealand in 1851. Trained in Victorian England he was exposed to the philosophical, artistic and architectural movements of the times. New Zealand was to inherit the aspirations and architectural styles associated with these movements from such emigres as Beatson. One movement of the period which was to influence the development of New Zealand was the Romantic movement. The New Zealand Company organised some of the settlements in the new colony and the ideas of its founder, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, were embued with the Romantic philosophy of a return to a 'Golden Age' based on a closer link with nature. Nelson was a New Zealand Company settlement and it was here that William Beatson chose to live and practise architecture.. The 1850's in Nelson were a time of economic uncertainty and architecture was one vehicle that would provide a sense of security by transplanting accepted styles common in England. Beatson was engaged by many Nelsonians, being one of the few architects in New Zealand educated at the Royal Academy, and who, architecturally, helped to establish the social fabric of Nelson as envisaged by Wakefield. Beatson was aware of the different physical, climatical and geographical differences of New Zealand from England and therefore used innovation of design and use of materials in consideration of many of his buildings. He designed many of Nelson's first churches, commercial buildings, houses and college.
