How Maui Found the Secret of Fire

Peter Gossages Maui series is well-known and loved. The books follow Maui’s birth, his abandonment by his mother and his search for her, his search for his father and discovery and eventual owners of his grandfather’s magic jawbone, and his fishing up of Te Ika a Maui (the North Island). How Maui found the Secret of Fire is the story of how, on a mission to discover how fire is made, Maui visits his Aunty Mahuika. Each time he is given a flame he tells her he has lost it, until he eventually has lost all but one of her flames. In a rage she flings her last flame into a kaikomako tree. Maui takes a piece of hard mahoe wood and rubs it against a branch of the tree, bringing fire for eternity to his people.
